Alicante airport slows down and loses 80,000 passengers this summer

El Altet breaks a trend of increases since 2012 and in July and August falls traffic of 2.1 and 3.3% despite the increase in national demand

In the accumulated of the year the number of flights also decreases

It seems that the traffic data of the Alicante-Elche airport confirm the tendency detected by the businessmen about a fall of the international market and a possible change of cycle in the arrival of tourists.

The infrastructure, located in the Elictet El Altet, closed the month of August with a total of 1,562,129 passengers, representing a decrease of 3.3% compared to the same month of 2017 (about 52,000 fewer users).

As for operations, these fell 1.7 points, to 10,350. This is the second consecutive month in which El Altet recorded a reduction of its two main parameters, after closing July with 2.2% fewer passengers (slightly less than 1.6 million) and a reduction of 1.8% on flights.

In total, some 80,000 passengers have been lost this summer.

Take A Look Inside Alicante Airport

This trend did not occur since 2012, in which the war started by the company Ryanair with Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (Aena) caused that at the end of the year a 10% of traffic was lost at once, until reaching 8 , 8 million passengers.

In fact, the two bad data of the high season have lowered the annual statistics, which in the accumulated between January and August is close to zero growth. In the case of passenger data there is still a slight rise of 0.3%, up to 9.4 million.

Regarding the operations, Alicante airport managed a total of 65,011 flights during the first eight months of the year, which implies a decrease of 0.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

All this after 2017 was the best year in the history of infrastructure, with 13.7 million users.
