David Suchet Teases Poirot Return

David Suchet has said he would love to return to his most famous role – but on one condition.

The 72-year-old took on the role of Hercule Poirot in 1989, portraying him in 70 episodes of the show until the final episode in 2013, where Agatha Christie’s beloved character died.

But the star has not ruled out taking on the role again – but it would need to be a very specific set of circumstances.

Phillip Schofield suggested that there was an appetite for the public to see him take the role on pleading “If ITV won’t do it, so what about Netflix , Amazon? Come on, guys! There’s a Poirot movie to be made here.”

To this suggestion, David replied: “I have to be asked but I think they’re moving on.

“I’d do the movie, but I wouldn’t do another television series. I’d do the movie – I’d love to do that.”

He also said he becomes emotional when he thinks of how the writer, the great Agatha Christie, apparently approved of his performance.

David continued: “I never met Agatha but the greatest compliment – I still get quite emotional when I think about it.

“She [Agatha’s daughter] actually said, famously, her mother hated people playing Poirot – it never came up to expectations, but one morning she came on the set and said, ‘I have to tell you, my mother would be very proud.'”
